Christmas Gift Guide

A Hedges Direct guide to choosing the right gifts this Christmas

Whether you’re looking for a Christmas gift for a new homer-owner, or filling the stocking of your green-fingered friends and family; we have created this guide full of great and unique Christmas gift ideas that last a life time…

1. Topiary

A festive feature for the garden

Topiary makes a great focal point in any garden. The beautiful shapes make for a great feature in both classic and contemporary gardens.

These ornamental plants have been around since the Egyptian era, and is as popular now as it was then. With the right topiary plants, you can turn a garden from mundane to stunning!

All of our Topiary can be container grown, which makes them ideal plants for patios and urban garden design.

These days, topiary shaping is as much science as art – plants are photographed from all angles and then a computerised trimmer (like a robot) snips all around the foliage to create a symmetrical shape.

With some outdoor fairy lights you can used topiary plants as mini Christmas trees in the garden.

From keen gardeners to new home owners, this is a perfect gift for a loved one.

2. Garden Shrubs

We have a large selection of garden shrubs to shop from to find the perfect shrub for the gardener in your life. Our garden shrubs come in a wide range of species and sizes from 2L to 10L pots and are highly popular varieties, with many featuring in this year’s RHS Garden Shows.

We have an excellent choice of evergreen, flowering, colourful and unusual shrubs, from which to choose and options to suit most gardens and locations, including compact, slow-growing shrubs for smaller gardens and large, showy shrubs for those with a little more room to their outside space. With a range of shapes and sizes available, we know you will find the perfect gift.

Berberis thunbergii ‘Admiration’ is a popular, colourful Japanese Barberry and deserving winner of the distinguished Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Buddleja davidii ‘Black Knight’, commonly known as Butterfly Bush ‘Black Knight’, is a UK garden favourite and recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. This deciduous, vigorous shrub has deep purple-violet, sweetly scented, large flower spikes which are a magnet for butterflies and other pollinators. Its long, lance-like green leaves have paler undersides and the shrub has an overall softly arching habit.

Choisya ‘White Dazzler’ is a very popular variety of Mexican Orange Blossom sought after for its bountiful star-shaped white, highly fragrant flowers produced in spring and sometimes again in late summer/early autumn. This pretty shrub is compact and forms natural mounds as it grows.

Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’ is more commonly known as a Smoke Bush. It is a large deciduous shrub with distinctive, rounded, deep-purple leaves that in autumn become a vivid red.

Their striking colours and fragrant blooms create the perfect focal point for any garden. So, whether you are looking for a wildlife-friendly feature, or stunning colours and textures brought by our garden shrubs, we know there is a perfect garden shrub for every garden.

3. Colorful Foliage Hedging

A garden design based solely on flowers may create fantastic displays of colours, but is relatively short lived. The main benefit of utilising colourful foliage is that the wonderful shades, shapes and textures, are present for the majority of the year and, if evergreen, remain year round. So forget about the flowers and focus on the foliage by developing the types of plants that provide constant colour, whilst other plants come in and out of bloom. With a huge range of vivid colours, patterns and designs, here at Hedges Direct, we have the best hedging plants with colourful foliage for you.

Incredible colours are what we love to see in our gardens and it’s a great way for us gardeners to express our creative side. In numerous gardens and garden designs, colour provided by flowers more often than not takes priority over other plants. What many gardeners frequently disregard is that there is much more to garden colour than just flowers. Foliage plants use an array of textures, forms and colours that contrast and complement other foliage to create wonderful, eye-catching features.

Winter Colour

Evergreens – look fab in winter!

With evergreen topiary or hedging you can brighten someone’s garden this Christmas with green full hedging no matter the frosty scene outside. Evergreen plants offer consistent leaf cover for a full hedge look year-round.

The fullness of the foliage creates a natural green screen perfect for keeping gardens secluded from general view. Evergreen plants, dependent upon the species, also have excellent sound-absorbing capabilities and popular in built-up, urban areas.

They can also act as a natural windbreak for homes and gardens in general but are particularly suitable for those with a more exposed aspect. Evergreen hedging can act as a highly effective pollutant absorbent, helping to filter toxic particles from the air, generated by traffic emissions.

With the permanent leaf cover, the air in the vicinity is consistently cleaner. Environmentally, evergreen hedges have a myriad of positives. They help stabilise the ground and prevent soil erosion. They’re an ideal flood prevention measure, soaking up excess groundwater before it can reach hard surfaces or homes.
