Hedges Direct At The 2017 Custodian Awards

Hedges Direct Sponsors Horticulture Week’s Custodian Awards 2017

Stunning and historic Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire this week played host to the combined event which was Horticulture Week‘s Parks and Gardens Live 2017 and The Custodian Awards which recognises outstanding contributions to the creation, renovation, maintenance and management of parks and gardens across the UK.  The Abbey, which has been home to the Earls and Dukes of Bedford since the 1620s has stunning feature gardens which have over recent years been beautifully restored by the team at Woburn Abbey, along with an extensive deer park and elegant building architecture with an ornate and striking interior. All in all it was the perfect setting in which to celebrate the achievements of exceptionally dedicated and innovative teams, striving to preserve and enhance our estates and green spaces to provide enjoyment and education both now and in the future.

Parks and Gardens Live featured a number of exhibitors from seeds and topsoil to grounds maintenance machinery, and product showcases of various types took place throughout the day as well as gardener led tours of the abbey and gardens.

Inside there were a number of expert-led workshops to inform and share best practice on a range of subjects. It was a fantastic opportunity for learning and networking for the horticultural community in attendance.

The Parks and Gardens Live event was followed by the Horticulture Week Custodian Awards which took place in the beautiful Sculpture Gallery building. Hedges Direct were proud sponsors for these prestigious awards which were attended by teams and individuals from all over the UK and Perennial, the horticultural industry charity were also the official partners for the event.

Lord Michael Heseltine, former cabinet MP kindly agreed to present the awards, and spoke with the audience on how he was an avid and ‘manic gardener’. He stated that his garden had provided him with great relief from the stress of life in the cabinet during his time as an MP. He also spoke of how he felt passionately that gardens and green spaces could be of huge benefit to all, but could be especially important in transforming the environment in disadvantaged communities. An inspiring and heartfelt speech.

Hedges Direct were also sponsors of the ‘Gardens Restoration and Development Project’ Award which was won by The National Trust’s Bodnant Garden for their restoration work on ‘The Bath’, an ornamental pool which dates back to the Victorian period at Bodnant Hall on the Bodnant Estate in North Wales. Click here to find out more about this unique project.

Pictured below is the winning team with the award presented by Hedges Direct’s Sales Manager, Nick Elson and Lord Heseltine. Well done to the team from Bodnant Garden!

There were some outstanding projects highlighted at the awards from community involvement initiatives to painstaking restoration. In particular there was a moving recognition for the Thipeval Heritage Park Team from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the memorial and garden at the location of the battle of the Somme at which 70,000 fallen soldiers are commemorated and remembered, and which was the centre of the centenary celebrations in 2016.

Overall, it was a fantastic day and lovely to see the wonderful work from so many dedicated people.

Go For Gold!

The Rio 2016 Olympic Games are truly under way and I must admit, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching all the different sporting events and getting in the Olympic spirit by cheering on team GB.

I’m sure that you can guess that my recent obsession with the Olympic Games inspired me to write this blog. Like the thousands of athletes competing in Rio, I too am going for gold. However, I’m not talking about the prestigious gold medal presented to the winning competitors, I’m talking about golden foliage as a glittering addition to a garden design.

At Hedges Direct, we offer a range of hedge plants with lavish foliage displaying golden tints, perfect for creating a garden worthy of first place.

Golden Bamboo is certainly the first to mention. Its strength and speed are similar to those of a 100m sprinter with the intention to get to the finish line in the quickest time possible. This hardy species breaks our growth records achieving 60+cm a year. The Usain Bolt of the plant world.

Our conifer varieties boast fantastic shades of gold. Golden Leylandii and Monterey Cypress ‘Goldcrest’ are beautiful, evergreen species with golden yellow spray-like foliage. Monterey Cypress ‘Goldcrest’ has the brighter foliage of the two species and has a lemon scented fragrance in summer, especially when cut or brushed.

Golden Elder, which displays an attractive bronze colour when young, turns golden yellow with maturity. Lonicera nitida ‘Baggessen’s Gold’ is the perfect option for summer colour as it is well suited to sunny areas and its leaves are capable of reflecting sunlight which emphasises its golden tint. Golden colours can also appear on variegated foliage, Golden Privet and Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald n Gold’ have green glossy leaves with an outline of golden yellow giving these hedge plants a contrasting appearance.

This blog couldn’t have arrived at a better time as Hedges Direct welcome a new hedging species to their team, Ilex Crenata ‘Golden Gem‘. Slow and steady wins the race with this plant as it will achieve 10-20cm per year and will therefore require little maintenance. It’s a golden alternative to the green Ilex Crenata and the popular Buxus sempervirens as it is used for creating a low garden border.

You can utilise the brilliant foliage of these plants as individual features or as a bright setting to offset the colours of other plants. So bring home the gold with my suggestions and make your garden a winner.

Hedges Direct through the years…

As we’re celebrating our 10th Birthday this month, we wanted to give you an insight into the history of Hedges Direct and how the company has changed over the last 10 years.hedges direct team

2005 – Hedges Direct was established in 2005. In the very beginning, all business was conducted with one laptop and a mobile phone. There were 14 orders in the first week and as the team only consisted of myself and my husband Dave, we used to take our laptop on holiday and drive up a hill to get a broadband signal using a dongle so that we could download the orders – sometimes we even had to use the internet in local libraries to be able to work.

2006 – We moved from our home office in Bath into a portable cabin and began selling bare roots as well as container grown plants.

2008 – We expanded into a bigger portable cabin to accommodate two new employees and started selling cell grown plants and root balls.

2011 – The business relocated up north to Five Acres Nursery in Euxton, Lancashire.

2012 – A new despatch shed was built on the site to accommodate the increased number of orders being processed.

2013 – Hedges Direct first began selling turf and instant hedging.

2013 – This year saw the beginning of our relationship with ITV’s Love Your Garden.

2014Pleached trees were added to our catalogue of products.

2015 – Hedges Direct was awarded Feefo Gold Trusted Merchant accreditation.

2015 – September marks the 10th anniversary of Hedges Direct.

Collaboration success for Hedges Direct and Chic Teak

The 2015 RHS Hampton Court Flower Show saw the first alliance between Hedges Direct and Chic Teak, a top designer and manufacturer of quality teak outdoor and garden furniture. This was then followed by a second collaboration for the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park.

Chic Teak put together a trade stand for the two RHS shows to display their premium garden furniture and, with the help of our Instant Hornbeam hedging and Box Topiary shapes, managed to create a life-like garden. Several other BALI members were involved in supplying Chic Teak with materials, and specialist florist, Robie Flowers, added a touch of beauty with their striking centre pieces for the outdoor tables.

The Chic Teak trade stand received a Tradestand Award at both RHS Shows; a 3 Star Tradestand Award at RHS Hampton Court, and after taking on feedback from the judges, more Hornbeam instant screens were added to the display, resulting in a 4 Star Tradestand Award at RHS Tatton Park.

June Pearce, Director of Hedges Direct, said: “We’re always keen to work with other BALI members and industry experts, especially for events as prestigious as the RHS Shows. Coming together to create exhibitions as marvellous as the Chic Teak stand just proves how the right collaboration can have fantastic results for all parties involved.”

“After visiting the stand and seeing our hedging and topiary first-hand at the exhibition, we’d be delighted to work with Chic Teak again in the future, as the hedging plants and furniture seem to wonderfully complement each other, allowing visitors to really envisage the products in their own garden.”

Collaboration success for Hedges Direct and Chic Teak (2)

Instant hedging and topiary were a big trend at this year’s Tatton Park event, with numerous designers using instant hedging to create a canvas for their show garden, and Topiary shapes decorating a variety of different stands.

Hedges Direct are thrilled to have contributed to an award winning stand and look forward to future collaborations.

Hedges Direct supply Ivy screens to ITV’s Love Your Garden

Following the successful relationship between Hedges Direct and Love Your Garden over the last three years, we were asked to supply more plants for another episode in the current series of the popular ITV show.

Earlier in the series, we supplied Yew instant hedging to transform a tired family garden into a futuristic, modern space and have since provided four Ivy screens for another garden transformation. The Ivy screens, also known as living fences, are used to cover an unsightly oil tank, providing a more aesthetically pleasing solution than a fence.

The Ivy screens are made from a non-invasive species of Ivy that has dense foliage giving good coverage. Thirteen Ivy plants, each with five stems, are grown on light-weight galvanised steel frames which are easy to install and provide immediate impact. The many benefits of Ivy screens not only make them a great choice for domestic gardens but also businesses and public spaces too. The narrow screens are ideal for small spaces where a bushier hedge may take up too much room and they make an attractive alternative to fences and walls, providing both security and privacy with added wildlife value.Ivy Screens

Last month we celebrated the return of Love Your Garden to ITV with a Facebook competition in which three winners each won a Fruit Tree and planting kit. Following the success of this competition, we are now giving away £150 worth of vouchers to three lucky winners so they can recreate the look from their favourite Love Your Garden episodes in their own garden. To be in with the chance of winning, enter our #HDGetTheLook competition here. The winners will be announced on Monday 24th August.

Next week Alan and the team will be returning to a garden from last year’s series in which Hedges Direct supplied mixed native instant hedging and Lavender plants to transform a hospice in Luton. Catch the wildlife special on 18th August at the usual time of 8pm.

If you’ve missed any episodes from this series, you can catch up on ITV player.
